How to Choose the Right Battery Cells
A comprehensive guide to selecting lithium battery cells for your application. Learn the key factors that impact performance, reliability, and cost.
6 Key Factors to Consider
Choosing the right battery cells requires understanding these critical parameters. Each factor impacts performance, cost, and reliability of your final product.
Capacity (mAh/Wh)
Determines how long your device can run. Measured in milliamp-hours (mAh) or watt-hours (Wh). Higher capacity = longer runtime, but also larger size and weight.
Discharge Rate (C-Rate)
Indicates how fast the battery can deliver power. Measured in C-rates (1C = full capacity in 1 hour). High-drain devices need higher C-rates (10C-50C). Consumer devices typically use 1C-3C.
Operating Temperature
Battery performance varies with temperature. Standard range: -10°C to +60°C. For extreme environments, consider low-temperature or high-temperature variants. JHY offers -20°C to +80°C options.
Form Factor & Size
Choose between polymer (flexible, ultra-thin 0.4mm), cylindrical (18650, 21700, 26650), or prismatic cells. Consider space constraints and mechanical requirements of your design.
Cycle Life
Number of charge-discharge cycles before capacity degrades to 80%. JHY cells offer 2000-3000+ cycles. Medical devices need higher cycle life (5000+ cycles) for reliability.
Certifications & Standards
Medical devices require ISO 13485. Consumer electronics need UL/CE. Industrial applications may need RoHS, REACH compliance. JHY holds all major certifications.

6-Step Battery Selection Process
Follow this systematic approach to ensure you select the optimal battery cells for your application.
Define Your Requirements
Determine required runtime (hours of operation)
Calculate power consumption (mW or W)
Identify operating temperature range
List space and weight constraints
Calculate Capacity Needed
Formula: Capacity (mAh) = Power (mW) × Runtime (hours) / Voltage (V)
Add 10-20% safety margin for aging
Consider multiple cells in series/parallel for higher voltage
Determine Discharge Rate
Peak current draw ÷ Battery capacity = Required C-rate
Example: 1A peak / 2000mAh = 0.5C
Select cells rated for 1.5-2x your calculated rate
Select Form Factor
Polymer: Best for thin, flexible designs (wearables, medical)
Cylindrical: Standard for power tools, flashlights, e-bikes
Prismatic: Optimal for space-constrained applications
Verify Certifications
Medical: ISO 13485, USP Class VI
Consumer: UL, CE, FCC
Industrial: RoHS, REACH, ISO 9001
